Prolonged sun exposure is the most common cause.

Hyperpigmentation occurs due to an overproduction of melanin. There are many types of hyperpigmentation, the common ones being Melasma (Chloasma), Hori’s Nevus, Solar Lentigo, Enphilides (Freckles), Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH), Age Spot and Sun Spot.

This can be triggered by prolonged sun exposure, pregnancy or hormonal changes, genetic factors, age, skin injuries or inflammation. Cases are treated with reams, chemical peels, or laser therapy depending on the cause of pigmentation.

Prevention: Apply sunscreen (SPF30++ and above) regularly on your exposed face and body.

OCAP skin, although tough to deal with, is treatable and preventable.

OCAP skin produces a higher quantity of sebum, and the probability of breakouts is higher than other skin types. In some cases of severe acne skin condition, papules and pustules appear and skin becomes red and inflamed. It is important to keep a consistent skincare routine for optimal hygiene, to avoid sporadic breakouts.

Rosacea may be disruptive, but its symptoms can be reduced with treatment.

Rosacea is diagnosed as redness and visible blood vessels showing on the face, and can be hereditary. Swollen, red bumps are also common, and can occur irregularly.

Symptoms may be triggered by exposure to heat, sunlight, exercise, cold, spicy food, alcohol, menopause, psychological stress, or application of facial steroid creams.

You can prevent worsening of symptoms by applying sunscreen everyday, and moisturizing frequently.

Treatments to help reduce redness and inflammation include light therapy and radiowaves.

Scarring from breakouts can be reduced with laser treatment.

After a breakout, acne scars are a common sight that can be easily mistaken as pigmentation.

As post-acne wounds heal, touching and squeezing these spots will cause damage to the tissues and veins around it. Acne scars then form at these spots, below the skin’s surface.

Laser treatments help to smoothen the texture of the skin, and diminish the appearance of scars.

Uneven skin tones can be caused by sun exposure, aging, scarring or hormonal changes.

Sun exposure is the primary cause for uneven skin tones. Our skin cells can be activated by the sun to increase production of color, which causes tanning. Long-term exposure can lead to formation of sunspots.

Uneven skin tones can also appear on the skin as redness, age spots or scars. Aging can also cause some parts of the skin to look dull.
